For my research project, I decided to do a close reading of Aimé Césaire’s Discourse on Colonialism, a seminal work that makes a strong argument for the end of colonial exploration by Europe over the Southern Hemisphere. I compared the horrors expressed in the paper during a time of formal colonialism to the events occurring today in Francophone Africa. I conclude that while progress has been made to reduce European control in the last 60 years, we are still a long way from equality between the colonizers and the colonized.
